What to expect during a Shiatsu Treatment:

A Shiatsu treatment is usually about an hour in duration, though the initial session may be longer as the therapist will take a detailed case history in order to determine an overall view of your health according to the principals of Shiatsu and Oriental Medicine.

Shiatsu treatments are done at floor level on a comfortable mat or futon. The client is fully clothed and should wear loose comfortable clothing during a session.

The session begins with a Hara Assessment (gentle palpation of the abdominal region) to determine any energetic imbalances in the body.

The treatment will be based on this assessment and will also address any physical or health concerns brought up in the initial intake. The session itself is generally very relaxing however after it is common to feel energised and refreshed, with an increase in mental clarity.

Shiatsu works by applying gentle pressure using thumbs, elbows and knees, to different points on the body, and along its meridian pathways. While Shiatsu pressure can sometimes be intense, it should never be painful or uncomfortable for the receiver. A good therapist will check in with the client to ensure their comfort, relaxation and wellbeing.

Following a session it is important to drink plenty of water in order to flush out any toxins that may have been released.

Chair Shiatsu is a good option for shorter treatments, and can be done in the home or workplace. While this treatment does not require as much space and is great for easing tension and stiffness in the shoulders, back and upper body, it is not as beneficial as a full treatment performed on a mat.
